HallOrNoHall.com

Hall or No Hall LogoThe idea of HallOrNoHall.com came from my long-time friend and business cohort, Matt Thompson.  The idea actually originated a few years ago as we closed down our podcast and were looking for something new and fun that didn’t require so much work.  We’re both sports fans, so it was a naturally fun idea to pursue.  Out of the blue, Matt tweeted a #hallornohall challenge and we ran with it.

HallOrNoHall.com

We launched the site on August 5, 2009.  The focus of the site is simple.  We choose MLB, NFL or NBA players and debate whether they belong in their respective sport’s Hall of Fame.

The site was built on WordPress using the Thesis theme.  Our buddy and partner on quite a few projects, Bert Mahoney, supplied the men’s club theme (well, a bit cleaner than the type of men’s club you’re thinking of).

Because each post is actually two posts in one, I created a custom plugin for WordPress that uses short codes to insert the posts into a single post, giving it the left/right columns.  I also used Sean Lahman’s baseball database and built a player card function to automatically create and insert the player’s statistics.  To help with researching players, I created a website using PHP, MySQL and the CodeIgniter framework to allow Matt and me to query the database for interesting statistics and comparable players.  The poll engine is a plugin called WP-Polls.  The site has a Twitter integration via the Twitter Tools plugin.

If the site gains traction, we’ll look to expand into widgets and other interactive things where visitors can interact with statistical data.
